The Knife River Indian Heritage Foundation Board of Directors met at the 7 Trails Trading Post on May 7, 2013. Those present were: Donna Buchmann, Elaine Buchholz, Nola Good, Ray Kerns, Dorothy Cook, and Rose Laning.

President Donna called the meeting to order and additions to the agenda were made. Rose read the minutes from the last meeting and the treasurer's report was $2071.07. Elaine moved to accept the reports. Ray seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Old Business: There is still no news about the Northern Plains National Heritage Area grant.

We discussed the Winter Outbound event from February 9 and there were many favorable comments. We deposited a check for $467.00 for the meals served that day.

Donna stated that the Mercer County Fair will be on June 20-23, 2013. Ray moved that we have a booth. Elaine seconded the motion. Motion carried. Rose stated that she will not be able to help with the booth this year due to other commitments.

New Business: Larry Wanberg received a $2700.00 grant from the National Council on the Arts and had stated previously that he would like to park his camper at 7 Trails. Ray said he would get hold of Noel and try to finish the electrical post for camper hook-ups.

Donna and Nola met with Joe Huntsmacher of Senior Experience Works. Nola can work for 24 hours a week and can help with the library. Her wage through Sr. Exp. Works is unclear, but will be covered by them.

The parking lot at 7 Trails is rather muddy after a rain, so we discussed the possibility of bringing in some gravel and making approaching ICI to see if they can help. Donna will explore to see what can be done.

Dorothy informed us that Nate Welk of Bismarck will be conducting the photography workshop on May 11, 2013.

Also Kids Camp will be July 9, 16, 23, 30.

Ray mentioned that Brian would like to set up a pottery wheel at 7 Trails for demonstrations.

Our next meeting will be June 11, 2013 at 1:30 pm.

August 11, 2009
The Knife River Indian Heritage Foundation Board of Directors met at the 7 Trails Trading Post on August 11, 2009 Those present were: Donna Buchmann, Ray Kerns, Noel Narveson, Dorothy Cook, Brian McCutchen and Rose Laning.

President Donna Buchmann called the meeting to order and additions were made to the agenda.

Rose read the minutes from the previous meeting and corrections were made. She also gave the treasurer's report. There is a balance of $3894.67. Ray moved to approve the reports and Noel 2nd the motion. Motion carried.

Ray turned in a bill of $100.47 which was $35.80 for glass (dichroic arrowheads); $15.92 for the hardware for the cottonwood benches; and $48.75 for a chainsaw blade. Noel moved to pay the bills, Rose 2nd the motion. Motion carried.

Brian inquired whether we had received a $200 stipend from Preservation ND for a presentation he made and had requested their stipend go to the Foundation. We have received no check, so he will check on it. Our thanks goes out to Brian for his faith in our Foundation whether we receive the check or not.

The Culture Fest went well and Dorothy reported that 540 people attended the event this year compared to 599 in 2008. We made a few changes and had a lot of favorable comments. Brian said he also received many favorable comments.

The Kids Camp was very well attended and we estimate nearly 175 kids participated in the event.

The Dedication of the 7 Trails Trading Post also went very well. Rose relayed how Garrett Benson, Edwin's grandson, seemed visibly moved after the ceremony and we felt he had touched roots with his ancestry. Frederick Baker also commented that his family enjoyed their visit to Knife River and he wants to stay involved with the Foundation.

Noel said he is still waiting to hear from Tech Soup (which is a technology website) on the acceptance of our letter of declaration on being a non-profit organization.

Ray said the wood benches are ready and the Stanton city sign entering town is finished. He want to know the best location for the earthlodge frame. It will contain about 80 posts. He is also going to contact all the Stanton businesses about the sign north of the bank and see what interest lies out there.

Rose sent an email to the Lindsay Group asking about possible dates to meet this fall.

Brian informed the Foundation that the Ken Burns/Dayton Duncan movie on the National Parks premieres on television on Sept. 27, but there will be a preview at the Sidney J. Lee Auditorium on Sept. 17 at 7 pm at Bismarck State College. The Fort Mandan and the Dakota Institute at Washburn are hosting the event. The 3 Friends Groups will be hosting the social.

On October 26, 2009, the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site will be celebrating their 35th anniversary. There will be a postal cancellation, photo exhibit and possibly an adult class. Marilyn Hudson said she will bring her 1863 photos here in Oct/Nov. Other details of the anniversary will be worked out later.

Brian said he still hasn't heard anything about the water hook-up.

Rose suggested we think about getting a new executive director and communications director and she read an email from Adrian saying he was busy working with his son to start a charity for children with cancer. Dorothy suggested business leadership students from Dickinson State. We'll play it by ear for now.

Brian will attend the PowWow in Bismarck on Sept 10-13 and the Winter Adventure has been set for February 13.

July 14, 2009
The Knife River Indian Heritage Foundation Board of Directors met at the 7 Trails Trading Post on July 14, 2009 Those present were: Donna Buchmann, Ray Kerns, Dorothy Cook, Noel Narveson, Maureen McGee-Balinger and Rose Laning.

President Donna Buchmann called the meeting to order and additions were made to the agenda.

Rose read the minutes from the previous meeting and also gave the treasurer's report. There is a balance of $2211.81. The insurance bill will be coming due and will be approx. $1285.00. Ray moved to approve the reports and Noel 2nd the motion. Motion carried.

Donna reported on the trees and will send Edwin Benson a letter requesting him to give the blessing at our dedication. The dedication of 7 Trails is set for 1:00 MT on August 1, 2009 which is during Knife River Days. We will invite all of the original board members and give them some time to speak. Cheri will be asked to do a cake(s) and Dorothy said she would help wherever needed.

Ray stated that he is making 2 cottonwood benches for the Park for a total of $250 and also 3 museum models for $800 for the Cross Ranch. He talked to the State Tax Department and cleared up any financial reporting. He will also take care of the Stanton sign on the south end of town that was damaged by the storm.

Rose and Donna met with the Stanton City Council about the Lindsay Group. There will be meetings this fall to define the focus of the Foundation and the Stanton area in regards to the Knife River Indian Villages. Those meeting with the Lindsay Group will be the Foundation, the Park, the City of Stanton, Civic Club and Park Board members.

Rose shared on the Northern Plains National Heritage Area.

We discussed having the Culture Fest potluck at 7 Trails. Ray will bring a macaroni salad; Donna a meatless taco salad; Maureen will bring potato salad, Rose will bring the chili.

Dorothy will take care of the letter from the State Tax Commissioner's office regarding the reporting of vendors for the Culture Fest.

Rose reported that we received a $600 grant from the ND Council on the Arts. We will advertise in the Dollar Saver, the Finder, the Dickinson Pennysaver and also on KFYR-TV.

We discussed the details of the Culture Fest. Dorothy will be on TV and it's listed on the Community Billboard as well as the Press Release. She reported on the response from the vendors. Meals will stay at $7.00.

Kids Camp is in full swing and going well.
